Clever Songs
03:33
|
|||
I know that you like clever songs. Well I guess this isn't one.
We tried to think of something better for ourselves, and instead we fell in love.
Now our hearts beat like two skipping stones on the surface of a manmade like, but I know part of us is waiting on the shore, holding out for heartbreak.
And I can hardly imagine why you would trust these hands to hold something so fragile that you'd only just repaired.
Oh maybe up in Canada, where everything is green and sweet, we can be more than struggling artists from hometowns made of concrete.
But I won't move if you don't, the air all tastes the same. And I can't forget the old apartments from which I came.
And I can hardly imagine why you would trust these hands to hold you, can't you see me? I'm just as scared.

The Last Mall in Town
02:18
|
|||
Echoing, our voices down the halls.
Beckoning, those empty storefronts call.
It's the last mall in town, and it's all ours tonight.
Any day now they will tear it down, leave a hole like asteroids razed the ground.
But it's the last mall in town and it's all ours for now.
On a Friday you will find us there, holding on to anything we can,
cus it's the last mall in town and it's all we got.
It's the last mall in town and it's all ours tonight.

I was hunting for ghosts, Bloody Mary with the door closed.
And you were Indiana Jones in all the movies we wrote.
Hale-Bopp in the sky above us hanging like an ornament.
Ivy-covered buildings feeling so mysterious and ancient.
Our dog ran down the road, but nights he always came home.
He dragged potted plants outside, tried to bury himself alive.
I was never young enough to think that there were easy answers.
I could only bring him in and wipe the dirt off from his fur.

Neon Light
02:44
|
|||
This town has so many bars, and we ride past them on our bikes.
We are soaked in neon light.
We cut through it like a knife
And it leaves me blind.
How'd I get so worn down?
Like pennies crushed out on the tracks showing our reflection back,
Where the year once was engraved we left a shining, empty space.
Oh we were so bold.
How did we get so bold?

Superhero Movies
01:38
|
|||
We watched "Are You Afraid of The Dark" all night on the night I met you.
I knew on the night I met you that you were the one.
We watched all of "Atlanta" the day it snowed and the city shut down.
We stayed in our little brick house waiting it out.
I want you from beginning to end, you're a book that I cannot put down,
you're the song that I carry around in my head.
You got me riled up like superhero movies do to superhero movie fanboys at midnight.
You're like that true crime I read until it wears me out,
I read until I need you near me in the dark.

I wish that I knew you when we were high school
I hope that I know you when we're both ancient
And planning our funerals, I hope that they're scary,
a loud organ playing a hymn about brimstone.
I think that it's funny we're stuck in these bodies
Cus sometimes I feel an infinity in us,
Something immortal, when I'm with you.
Our love will not die, we will be like birds flying in the air.

Somewhere, kids are going out, don't try to fight it.
Old cars, tires are peeling out like fighter pilots.
Your texts read like constellations on a cracked screen,
you say everybody's out, they're waiting on me.
I am upset by the smallest things, the dog at the party won't look at me.
Big house, boxes on the floor, your parents fighting.
School's out and everybody's bored, we're outdoors nightly.
Bike's old, handlebars too low. I ride behind you.
You ask where I want to go and I say, "Anywhere with you."
I am upset by the smallest things, the dog at the party won't look at me.

Happy People
02:18
|
|||
I'd be so delighted to grow old waiting for you to come home.
What a pleasure it would be if you'd let me take your heart, and I'd keep it buried.
Oh, I won't mind the wait at all.
My body will freeze over for you to thaw.
I would take such pride in my solitary life,
your name the only prayer I'd abide.
Cus I'd sooner die alone than let the coffee grow cold
Before I see you coming home to me.
Oh, I won't mind the wait at all.
My body will freeze over for you to thaw.

Life Finds a Way
03:01
|
|||
Ancient and fragile
Like a bug encased in amber,
I would wait a thousand years to meet you.
Small and determined
Like the robots they use to find old shipwrecks,
I would sink a thousand miles to see you.
Oh, I know the scope of things can be overwhelming sometimes.
I try to be understanding with the hurt you hand me when you're quiet.
Shiny and perfect
Like the crown on someone's prom queen,
You make every moment feel like magic.
Steady and pounding
Like my sneakers on the sidewalks,
I would run.
Yes I would run to you.
Oh, I know the scope of things can be overwhelming sometimes.
I try to be understanding with the hurt you hand me when you're quiet.

Everyone I know is aching with the ghost of what they know is right.
And everyone I know is aching in their bones with what they can't describe.
Oh, everyone I know will die.
Everyone I know feels so invincible. I feel it too, sometimes.
And everyone I know has some invisible and tragically short timeline.
Oh, everyone I know will die.
